North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper recently hinted that the state may legalize online sports betting this year, news that has been very well received by all betting fans. Gov. Cooper mentioned that lawyers in the state are currently working on legislation that seeks to introduce online sports betting during a game of the NHL’s Carolina Hunters.
Rep. Jason Saine also confirmed the news when asked by the press: “I believe Gov. Cooper is right in his optimism about mobile sports betting. Last session’s process helped identify matters that needed to be worked on with the legislation, as well as giving members (time) to talk to their constituents about the possibility of legalized sports betting,”
Saine recalled that the bill presented last year failed to pass the House, but it had the support of the entire Senate. For this new bill, the scenario could be similar. Still, he expects things to move faster and especially with the committees.
But the opposition is preparing to tear down the bill since they do not consider that the bets will bring a significant tax benefit to the state. Rep. Pricey Harrison, one of those who voted against it last year and planned to do so again, commented on this issue. “It is an interesting mix of super-progressives and super-conservatives who are concerned about the impacts this might have on our state. And, I think that coalition is still there and it’s still strong,” she said in a recent interview. “I don’t want us to get all glazed-eyed thinking this is going to be a great revenue source for our state because it won’t.”
